Jamie Lynn Spears’ summer 2016 release “Sleepover” is a flirty, uptempo song documenting the limbo between a thrilling tryst and the comfort of being a couple. This November, Spears brought the story to life with a heartfelt rendition of the song at Nashville’s famed Ryman Auditorium.
The Kentwood, Louisiana native’s Southern roots are evident in the noticeable twang of her vocals, though she takes the Opry performance in a poppy direction, turning up the bold chorus and slick electric guitar riffs. Radiating natural confidence, Spears asks for patience in this blooming relationship, singing “‘Cause I like that taking me out, treating me like a lady / While I’m figuring out do I wanna be your baby?” As the song wraps up and the full band’s booming sound fades to one wailing guitar, Spears’ knowing grin hints that such sleepovers can, in fact, sometimes work out just fine.
The 25-year-old singer and younger sister to pop star Britney has spent the past few years of her songwriting and singing career devoted to country music, most notably co-writing Jana Kramer’s RIAA Gold Certified hit “I Got the Boy.” She will headline the 2017 “Home for the Holidays” songwriting showcase at Manship Theatre in Baton Rouge on Tuesday, December 27th.
