Luke Combs will celebrate the June 2nd release of his full-length debut, This One’s for You, in Tampa, opening another amphitheater show for his year-long tourmate, Brantley Gilbert. Even so, the country newcomer tips his hat to a different chart-topper, Keith Urban, with a new Facebook cover of “Blue Ain’t Your Color.”
Packing equal parts soul and swagger, Combs croons a verse and chorus of Urban’s hit during the minute-long clip. His voice is stunning, filled with elastic runs and pitch-perfect phrasing. Joining him is guitarist Rob Williford, who teamed up with Combs to co-write two songs, “One Number Away” and “Don’t Tempt Me,” from the upcoming album.
“I think my cool factor is not having one,” Combs told Rolling Stone Country recently, proudly pointing to his ‘regular guy’ status. “I’m not extra cool or extra different. I’m an honest dude, not trying to be anything other than who I am.”
With his version of “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” though, Combs – who claims writing credits on all 12 songs from of This One’s For You – proves he’s more than capable of inhabiting another artist’s music.
