“To be able to go other there and watch [Brown] and his band perform 40, 50, 60 shows was an educational experience in itself,” White says in the video about his time touring with the Georgia native. “It’s one of those things that you have to kind of pinch yourself.”
Recorded in London, England, White’s solo acoustic performance of “Makin’ Me” displays the full depth of the Alabama native’s blues roots. Slow and raggedly beautiful, it marks a sharp contrast to the polish of the song’s studio version. But just when White hits his song’s last chord, he fires up a double-time romp through “Chicken Fried,” which adds his own soulful improvisations.
White is on the road this summer, mixing headliner gigs with select festival appearances, including the Deep Roots Mountain Revival in Masontown, West Virginia, on July 22nd. A full list of dates can be found here.
