Full of rapid-fire lyrics and a chillaxing, front-porch-at-sunset feel, Drake White’s current single, “Livin’ the Dream” couldn’t be more appropriate for the scruffy (but stylish) country newcomer. He’s still grinding through the tough early stages of his career, but his major-label debut, Spark, went straight to Number One on the iTunes country albums chart upon its release last week, so things are definitely off to a great start.
Tuesday morning, White took “Livin’ the Dream” and its glass-half-full message to ABC’s Good Morning America, offering some slippery slide guitar and a list of simple-living perks. Sporting what’s become his signature, outdoorsy look — double denim, handkerchief and a classic hat — he sang about having someone to lean on, kids in the backyard, a picket fence around the house and just enough to get by on — which seems like plenty to him.
Co-written by Tom Douglas, Jaren Johnston and Luke Laird, “Livin’ the Dream” is currently rising through the Top 30 on Billboard’s Country Airplay radio chart, still going strong after 37 weeks. White is spending his summer on the road, as an opening act on Zac Brown Band’s Black Out the Sun tour.
