See Dolly Parton, Miley Cyrus Sing Grooving ‘Jolene’ on ‘The Voice’

Last night on season 11 of NBC’s The Voice, newly anointed CMA lifetime achievement winner Dolly Parton took the stage for a much-anticipated performance with her goddaughter Miley Cyrus. The pair was supported by the sublime harmonies of vocal quintet Pentatonix for a rhythmic take on Parton’s “Jolene.”

Collectively draped in black and dripping glitter and rhinestones, the group of seven built a deep bassline and trilling sub-melodies throughout the 1974 chart-topping classic (which Pentatonix and Jennifer Nettles sang in tribute to Parton at the CMA Awards in November). While the a capella pop favorites laid out their syncopated, grooving backdrop, Cyrus and Parton took center stage, with their dueling riffs gaining momentum as the song progressed. Pentatonix’s foot-tapping arrangement added some new vigor, but the highlight was witnessing the palpable, familial love between Cyrus and Parton.

Earlier in the show, Parton joined Jennifer Nettles and the show’s Top 10 contestants to perform “Circle of Love,” which Nettles recorded for her new album To Celebrate Christmas. Swapping black ensembles for white (though the rhinestones were still present), angelic costumes and beautiful harmonies imbued the song with a delicate, ethereal vibe. The NBC movie Christmas of Many Colors, which stars Nettles and Parton and airs tonight at 9 p.m. ET, will also showcase the song.
