See Dierks Bentley’s Intense ‘Black’ Video

“Black” just may be the sexiest song of Dierks Bentley’s 13-year career, trumping even the likes of “Come a Little Closer” and “I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes.” “Knock me flat on my back, yeah/Just keep doing that/That thing you’re doing there/Brush me with your hair/I swear, I don’t know how long that I can last,” he sings in the passionate title track to his new album.

“My wife said, ‘I thought this was supposed to be a love song,'” recalls the singer-songwriter, who titled his album Black as a nod to wife Cassidy’s maiden name. “I said, ‘Black’ is the love song. And she said, ‘But it’s not a love song. . . it’s an in-the-moment love song.'”

Whether it’s about love or lust (or both), sex scenes heat up the “Black” video, making its world premiere on Rolling Stone Country today. Directed by Wes Edwards, the steamy clip is the final in a four-part video series depicting a love triangle that’s both edge-of-your-seat and erotic.

“I saw it originally in color and I thought, ‘Damn, that’s pretty racy!'” Bentley tells us, explaining that he and Edwards decided instead to go with black-and-white to mimic the album’s theme. “In color, it’s almost like Skin-emax, but you put it in black-and-white and it’s more like Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’: sexy cool. So we went a little more Chris Isaak, a little less Skin-emax. [Laughs].”

“Black” follows clips for “I’ll Be the Moon,” “What the Hell Did I Say” and “Pick Up,” that respectively play out the story line of a woman keeping a secret lover from her villainous boyfriend. The “I’ll Be the Moon” video sets the bed-hopping stage, followed by the more lighthearted “What the Hell Did I Say” clip that shows the lover’s drunken antics on a night out. “Pick Up” is where the series gets dark, as we find out that the boyfriend has violent tendencies — and possibly deadly karma coming his way. In “Black” (above), the woman has apparently killed — or at least severely harmed — the boyfriend, and she escapes with the lover for some intense mattress dancing. But any hope of a happy ending is washed down the drain like the blood on her hands.

Black is Bentley’s eighth studio album and has already struck chart gold with its first single, “Somewhere on a Beach,” which hit Number One this week — making for his 14th career chart-topper. The entire album is about relationships — the highs, the lows, the breakups, the makeups and all of the twists and turns that come with love.

“My wife is cool enough to let me write about personal things, to be a songwriter exploring the shadowy sides of love,” Bentley shares. “It’s personal to us, but I also want it to be universal.”
