Like a sizable portion of the United States, smooth-singing country duo Dan + Shay were swept up in the spirit of the Summer Olympics after the games got underway this weekend Rio de Janiero, Brazil. To show their support, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney went to New York to perform an uplifting cover of R. Kelly’s “The World’s Greatest” on ABC’s Good Morning America.
Originally recorded for the 2001 biopic Ali, “The World’s Greatest” channels the unwavering confidence and determination of athletes in competition with its main hook: “I’m that star up in the sky. I’m that mountain peak up high.” Mooney’s silky, malleable croon proves to be a nice match for Kelly’s soulful inflections, while Smyers and the band provide a lush backdrop of vocal harmonies and acoustic instrumentation through the song’s key changes. Meanwhile, the broadcast shows stills of American Olympic athletes in competition as well groups of future athletes from different cities – on playing fields or swimming in pools – waving the American flag, singing along and cheering.
Dan + Shay’s second album Obsessed appeared in early June and their current single “From the Ground Up” looks to follow previous hit “Nothin’ Like You” to the top of Billboard‘s Country Airplay as it makes it way through the top 5. This summer, they’re opening shows for Darius Rucker’s Good for a Good Time tour.
