Cyndi Lauper will make her debut appearance on the long-running live music series Austin City Limits on Saturday, January 14th. Airing on PBS, the hour-long episode will feature familiar Lauper hits as well as tunes from her Top Five country LP, Detour.
Among the songs Lauper will perform on the iconic ACL stage is the 1959 Ray Price hit “Heartaches by the Number,” a vibrant, fiddle-and-steel-soaked country shuffle. The singer adds a touch of rockabilly-inspired grit, rather than attempting to adhere to Price’s original version of the Harlan Howard-penned classic.
“I had to divorce myself from that and find a place where this music sat in my voice, where the sweet spots were, how I could bring it to life and how I could bring a story to it,” Lauper tells Rolling Stone Country.
Lauper recently wrapped her 2016 tour, introducing longtime fans to the beloved country covers she chose for Detour. The album also features guest appearances from Emmylou Harris (on the title track), Willie Nelson (joining her on “Night Life,” which he penned more than 50 years ago), Vince Gill (on the comical Loretta Lynn-Conway Twitty duet “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly”) and Alison Krauss (who joined her for the holiday favorite “Hard Candy Christmas,” most famously recorded by Dolly Parton).
Also in the mix are vintage Lauper songs including “She Bop,” “True Colors” and, of course, the one that has become her signature hit and a rallying cry for female camaraderie since Lauper recorded it in 1983, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” (Watch “True Colors” below.)
Austin City Limits, featuring Cyndi Lauper and her six-piece band, airs Saturday, January 14th, on PBS. The following week, the show welcomes Margo Price and Hayes Carll to the stage. Check local listings for specific air times.
