As a former rodeo rider, horseback prison guard and independent artist, Cody Johnson has built a rough-and-ready reputation for himself with country fans. But with his new video for the love ballad “With You I Am,” Johnson shows off a real-life cowboy’s sensitive side.
Filmed in the woods outside his home in Texas and featuring his wife Brandi and young daughter Clara, the clip finds Johnson and his happy family enjoying some honest-to-goodness quality time. And since Johnson writes exclusively from the heart, you can be sure the tender lyrics about feeling like the luckiest guy in the world are honest, too.
“I think something I try to put into my music and every part of it, from the lyrics of each song I write to the choices of what song goes on the album, it’s authenticity,” he told Rolling Stone Country as part of wide-ranging interview in August. “It’s honesty. If it’s a drinking song or a gospel song, or a love song, it doesn’t matter.”
That honesty has paid off, since “With You I Am” is part of Johnson’s head-turning sixth album Gotta Be Me, which earlier this year debuted at Number Two on the Billboard Country Albums chart. Gotta Be Me was second in sales only to Blake Shelton’s If I’m Honest, despite not having the support of a major record label or widespread radio play.
Continuing to build his rabid fan base one show at a time, Johnson is still on tour as Christmas approaches, with shows this weekend in Lubbock, Texas, Oklahoma City and Lawrence, Kansas.
