See Chris Stapleton Reveal Real Meaning of ‘Traveller’ on ‘Fallon’

Singer joins DNCE, Hailee Steinfeld for funny segment

Chris Stapleton’s breakout album Traveller leads off with the meditative title-track, depicting a world-weary rambler, resigned to a life on the move. Or, as Stapleton explains in a funny new clip from The Tonight Show, maybe it has to do with basketball.

In a segment called “Behind the Lyrics,” Stapleton, DNCE and Hailee Steinfeld share the meanings behind these songs. Stapleton notes that “Traveller” is “about seeing life through the eyes of an NBA referee. They see this stuff all day long,” he says, referencing the illegal basketball move. With a pregnant pause, he adds, “Oh, and for the people that work at Foot Locker, too.”

Joe Jonas’ band DNCE lead the segment with a free associative riff on “Cake by the Ocean,” which is somehow related to the Titanic. “Is that the boat with Leonardo DiCaprio?” asks band member Cole Whittle. Hailee Steinfeld relates her hit “Starving” to a harmful obsession with the Cheesecake Factory.

Stapleton will be able to crack some more jokes for audiences beginning in March, when he’s set to play the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, followed by a series of Canadian dates. He’s slated to release the follow-up to Traveller later in 2017.
