Carrie Underwood rode shotgun with James Corden as the CBS Late, Late Show host drove the streets of Los Angeles and the two played a lively round of Carpool Karaoke with some of Underwood’s biggest hits. In between dramatic renditions of “Smoke Break,” and “Jesus, Take the Wheel” — which the late-night funnyman took quite literally, nearly causing a collision — the two talked hockey, with the British-born comedian observing, “What I’ve seen is it’s essentially skating around on very sharp blades and then having a fight.” Corden then asked Underwood if she gets worried when her husband, NHL star Mike Fisher, fights on the ice.
“Have you seen his latest fight?” the “Heartbeat” singer asked. “He knocked a guy’s tooth out… it was pretty hot.”
The pair then discussed some of the essentials in country music, with Corden observing that he never owned a pair of cowboy boots, setting them up for their next adventure shopping in a store that sells western wear. “That’s our roots,” Underwood said, stumbling on to a new catchphrase: “The boots are our roots.”
While Underwood looked on, Corden was outfitted in fancy boots, a brown cowboy hat and sleeveless leather vest but backed off from a total transformation when the sales associate revealed the hefty price tag of the items. “I’m sorry, we’re not all multi-platinum recording artists… some of us are on CBS at 12:30,” he told Underwood, who then had to help him remove the boots before they could leave.
Their drive continued with the pair belting out “Before He Cheats,” after which Corden asked Underwood, “Is it true that you can hold a note for an inordinately long time?” “Probably,” she said modestly. Corden, however, proved himself up to the challenge.
The two ended their Carpool Karaoke party with the Wham! classic, “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go,” as Underwood admitted she knew every lyric to every song from the Eighties duo. No word yet on whether the country superstar will be adding any Wham! covers to the setlist when her Storyteller Tour – Stories in the Round launches January 30th in Jacksonville, Florida.
