Canaan Smith, who spent most of the summer as an opener on Dierks Bentley’s tour, will become a headliner himself this fall. During an appearance on NBC’s Today show Monday morning, Smith revealed plans for his Stompin’ Grounds Tour, kicking off in Charlotte, North Carolina, on November 6th. The trek hits 11 cities, with Nashville, Chicago and Little Rock among the destinations. Smith’s buddy, newcomer Russell Dickerson, will also be along for the ride.
After an introduction from Today hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb, Smith followed the tour announcement by delivering his latest single, “Hole in a Bottle.” The party anthem, which he wrote with Brett Beavers and Dan Couch, follows the Number One hit, “Love You Like That,” from Bronco, the debut LP from one of Rolling Stone Country‘s Artists You Need to Know in 2015.
Closing out the Sounds of Summer Tour this weekend, Smith says being on the road with Bentley “has been an amazing experience,” and adds, “I’m excited to perform additional material for fans in a more intimate setting.” By the end of the year, the singer will have played more than 175 shows to over 625,000 people. In addition to the “Riser” singer, Smith has also toured with Kip Moore and Dan + Shay.
A co-writer on the majority of his first album’s songs, Smith won’t likely do much writing for his follow-up until much later in the year.
“I’d rather write at home,” he tells Rolling Stone Country. “When I’m on the road I like to stay focused on entertaining and doing my job out there. When I get home I have a studio set up at my house, and it’s a comfortable spot for me.”
