See Cam’s Deceptively Bubbly ‘Half Broke Heart’ on ‘Live With Kelly’

Cam, who scored CMA Awards nominations this year for Song and Music Video for her devastating platinum-selling hit “Burning House,” delivered an entirely different type of emotional gut-punch with a vibrant performance of “Half Broke Heart” on Live With Kelly this morning. One of the standout tracks from the singer’s stellar debut LP, Untamed, “Half Broke Heart” benefits from the same up-tempo, na-na-nature of the best kiss-off tunes, but the singer’s bubbly disposition, on full display here, can’t mask the sadness simmering just below the surface.

In the same way she stares out from the Untamed album cover, drinking straight from a lemon – a bold personal statement that life’s sour challenges should be met with great intestinal fortitude – the pointed undercurrent running through the deceptively sunny-sounding “Half Broke Heart” is the all-too-real reminder that as the lyrics state: “A half-truth’s still a lie, ‘I need my space’ is still goodbye / A wrong size shoe could look good on you, but you’ll be cussin’ your feet at midnight.” Coming so close after presidential election results that left half the country reeling, Cam projects the ability to take it all in stride.

Cam is in New York, where Live With Kelly originates, for Thursday’s headlining appearance at the High Line Ballroom, a stop on her continuing Burning House Tour.
