See Brent Cobb Record Folksy ‘Down Home’ With Producer Cousin Dave Cobb

Singer-songwriter paints a rustic picture with his contribution to the all-star ‘Southern Family’ album

It’s only appropriate that for his Southern Family compilation, producer Dave Cobb recruited one of his own kin: his cousin and singer-songwriter Brent Cobb, who provides this swampy ode to his perfectly imperfect Georgia upbringing, “Down Home.” Fittingly, both Cobbs make an appearance in the video, premiering today, which tracks the song from the studio to the stage — after all, this is an album all about strong Southern roots and the familial ties that make them blossom.

While his cousin has become an institution in Nashville’s Americana and country music landscape, Brent Cobb has emerged as a country force in his own right, writing songs for the likes of Luke Bryan, Frankie Ballard and Little Big Town. As an artist, he’s recorded an EP, and is not afraid to bite the hand that feeds him — last year, he released the bro-country skewering “Yo Bro” as a reaction to the pressure to turn his bluegrass-leaning inclinations into something a bit more mainstream (Sample lyric: “You don’t have to think a thing/Just drink and shake it/And fake it ’til you make it”). For Southern Family, Dave Cobb didn’t demand a compromise, accenting the lanky, Southern sunburnt feel of “Down Home” with peppers of Muscle Shoals-esque gospel on the chorus.

Brent Cobb is currently recording his full-length album with his cousin, which will be released on Dave Cobb’s Low Country Sound imprint on Elektra Records.

Southern Family also features performances by Zac Brown, Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, John Paul White and Rich Robinson.
