In a Facebook update, Brad Paisley released his new song “Today” along with its accompanying video saying, “I hope it means as much to you as it does to me.” Paisley wrote the uplifting tune with Ashley Gorley and Chris DuBois and it will appear on Paisley’s forthcoming full-length album.
The “Today” video revolves around the song’s central idea of a happy memory being enough to sustain one through the hard times. “I don’t know about tomorrow, but right now the whole world feels right. And the memory of a day like today can get you through the rest of your life,” he sings in each chorus. The clip is comprised mainly of amateur recordings of important life events: marriage proposals and birth announcements (some of which take place at Paisley concerts) dominate, but there are numerous shots of baptisms, weddings, military men surprising their families at home and thrilling sports victories. Save for a few quiet scenes of Paisley scrawling the song’s lyrics in sand, these moments of unguarded joy and sincerity – including Paisley’s own spontaneous rush off stage to kiss his pregnant wife at the CMA Awards – do the work of bringing the message home.
“Today” is the second single released from Paisley’s as-yet-untitled new album, following the Demi Lovato duet “Without a Fight.” On November 2nd, he and Carrie Underwood will reprise their roles as co-hosts of the 50th annual CMA Awards.
