Blake Shelton and his Voice-judging pals Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams all appeared on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon last night, with country music’s tallest goofball taking the stage to sing no less than three times.
With his new greatest hits collection, Reloaded: 20 #1 Hits, hitting the racks last week, Shelton dialed in an effortless rendition of his flowing new single “Gonna,” taking the song’s demanding, rollercoaster melody and making it sound easy. The latest in a string of female-focused come-ons straddling the lyrical boundary between mild-mannered and over-the-line, the song fits perfectly with Shelton’s sense of humor, which popped up throughout the show.
Combining the old-school kissing game “Spin the Bottle” with a karaoke twist, Fallon enlisted all four Voice judges in a game of “Spin the Microphone,” with everyone standing in a circle to see who would sing a random (and embarrassing) pop song. Shelton was dragged onstage twice for the bit — probably owing to his razzing of Levine’s Britney Spears cover, which helped kick off the segment — first to play wedding singer on the Village People’s “YMCA,” and again with Stefani for a half-hearted duet attempt on Drake’s new rap hit, “Hotline Bling.”
Never missing the chance to make a dirty joke, Shelton pointed out that one of the game’s cartoonish sound effects made it sound as though somebody just got an erection. It was right after he sang “YMCA,” of course, so Levine stepped up and sheepishly raised his hand. [Watch it all go down here.]
