Watch Robert Ellis Channel Elton John in ‘F-cking Crazy’ Video

Songwriter plays piano in the Marfa, Texas, desert

Part of the beauty of Robert Ellis has always been his ability to match his uncanny talent and masterful musicianship with a sense of humor — while his last self-titled LP was a reflection on heartbreak and restlessness built with as much modern jazz as it was country, he took a turn with his brothers-in-arms, Cory Chisel and Jonny Fritz, to record this year’s cheekily joyful Traveller. And on his forthcoming album, Texas Piano Man (due February 14th via New West), he dives deeply into a new persona: a white-suited, blue bonnet Elton John determined to challenge expectations of what it means to be a musician residing in the Lone Star State. With a new video for his first single, “Fucking Crazy,” premiering on Rolling Stone Country, he’s clearly fit for the job.

Filmed in the rich landscape of Marfa, Texas, and directed by Erica Alexandra Silverman, the video carries that Ellis spirit of melding some serious silliness with a seriously potent song — and calls to mind the delicious antics of comrade Fritz. “I don’t know how to stop myself from acting so insane,” Ellis sings from the keys of a baby grand in the middle of the desert, his suit tailored to precision. It’s not the usual image of Texan machismo, but that’s the point: Ellis can do shit kicking honky-tonk just as well as he can inhabit an ivory-tickling Lone Star State of Mind.

Texas Piano Man will be available on February 14th, 2019, via New West, with pre-orders available now. The full track list is below.
