Randy Travis Plays Dying Country Legend in New Movie ‘The Price’

Before he suffered a stroke in 2013 that greatly affected his speech, Randy Travis filmed one last movie — and one that wasn’t much of a stretch: He plays a country music legend in the upcoming straight-to-DVD flick, The Price.

The movie also stars Travis’ real-life wife, Mary, as an old-flame who gave birth to his son 20-something years earlier. The son, played by The Voice alum James Dupré, is an aspiring country star himself, and wins a TV singing competition. Travis’ and Dupré’s character at first butt heads but eventually find paths to forgiveness, as Travis’ character faces his deathbed.

“It was a dream come true,” Dupré tells Rolling Stone Country of working with the Country Music Hall of Famer. “I remember the first day he showed up on set, I was really excited to meet him and unsure what to expect. Before I even had a chance to worry, he came up to me and shook my hand, pulled out his guitar and said he wanted to show me a new song he’d written. I couldn’t believe it! So we jammed out for a bit, then went to work.

“He’s such a great person and his commitment to both acting and singing inspires me,” he continues. “Throughout the shooting of the film, he showed me tips and made our scenes easier for me because he made it so believable.”

The Price comes out on Netflix and DVD June 15th.
