New Country Albums: Raelynn, Jessi Colter Anchor Diverse Release Day

RaeLynn’s ‘Wildhorse,’ Colter’s ‘Psalms’ and the debut EP from Lindsay Ell are records you need to hear

Female artists dominate the new country album releases this week, as one outlaw legend and two upstarts unveil fresh music.

RaeLynn releases her years-in-the-making debut LP Wildhorse, which follows her breakout success on The Voice and the 2014 hit “God Made Girls.” Her new single “Love Triangle” describes the aftermath of a divorce from a little girl’s point of view and was named one of the best songs of 2016 by Rolling Stone Country.

Singer-guitarist Lindsay Ell also releases her first Nashville project – a six-song EP appropriately titled Worth the Wait. Produced by Sugarland’s Kristian Bush, the Canada native highlights her voice and love of blues-rock on the new set, even including a cover of John Mayer’s “Stop This Train.” Bush asked Ell to record all of Mayer’s 2006 Continuum album – her favorite LP – to prepare for the experience of making her own record.

Finally, Jessi Colter, the queen of outlaw country, returns with her first album in 11 years, The Psalms. Inspired by the Old Testament’s Book of Psalms, Colter’s new tracks were recorded as she sang the familiar passages spontaneously on piano. Rock guitarist and author Lenny Kaye produced the set.
