The Americana Music Association U.K. (AMA-UK), a self-described “little sister” of the Nashville-based AMA, recently held their annual conference in London, with last weekend’s U.K. Americana Awards ceremony the centerpiece.
At the gala, staged at Hackney Empire in East London, Mary Gauthier was named International Artist of the Year, while Brandi Carlile’s powerful “The Joke” took home the award for International Song of the Year. Courtney Marie Andrews’ May Your Kindness Remain was crowned International Album of the Year.
Winning U.K. artists — most of whom have significant ties to Nashville — include Dean Owens, whose “Southern Wind,” the title cut of his 2018 LP, was named U.K. Song of the Year. Also taking home a trophy for that tune was Owens’ co-writer, Nashville musician-songwriter Will Kimbrough. U.K. Album of the Year was Nashville-based Northern Irishman Ben Glover’s Shorebound. Co-produced by Glover with Neilson Hubbard, the LP features a guest appearance from Kim Richey, who has long been a popular concert attraction throughout the U.K. Special awards were also presented at the event to rock legend Graham Nash, who was previously given the AMA’s Spirit of Americana Free Speech in Music Award during 2017’s Americana Honors & Awards Show at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.
Musician Rhiannon Giddens delivered the keynote address at the start of the three-day AmericanaFest U.K. conference, with other guest speakers throughout the event including John Oates and Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson.
Additional honors could be in the offing for Brandi Carlile and Mary Gauthier, both of whom are nominees at this weekend’s Grammy Awards ceremony. Gauthier’s Rifles & Rosary Beads is up for Best Folk Album while Carlile is the Grammys’ most-nominated female artist of the year, up for six awards including Album of the Year for By the Way, I Forgive You.
