Maren Morris Talks ‘Heartache’ of New Single ‘I Could Use a Love Song’

Singer says ‘Hero’ track is about “trying to not remain a cynic about love”

“I Could Use a Love Song,” Maren Morris’s latest single from her debut album Hero, is a more vulnerable release than previous hits “My Church” and “80s Mercedes.” The singer, who performed at this past weekend’s Tortuga Music Festival in Florida, says it was written about the dissolution of a relationship.

“The first two singles we released were very anthemic and fun and big messages, and this is just about that heartache you go through with a breakup and trying to not remain a cynic about love,” says Morris, “which is very hard to do.”

The Grammy-winning songwriter recently wrapped up her own headlining tour and is gearing up for a summer run with Sam Hunt.

“I’ve never headlined a tour before so this was my first time not opening for another artist,” she says of the Hero Tour, which concluded last week in Nashville. “And [it was] my first time seeing my fans – I didn’t know what they looked like, it was always in a sea of someone else’s fans.”

Along with Hunt’s 15 in a 30 Tour, Morris is set to play the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California, and CMA Music Festival in Nashville. She appears on Thomas Rhett’s new single “Craving You,” which the pair performed at April 2nd’s ACM Awards.
