Breakout star Luke Combs has already proven his knack for clever country wordplay, scoring Number One hits with singles like “Hurricane” — which compared seeing an ex to being struck by a coastal storm. But with his deep album cut “I Got Away With You,” the North Carolina native takes his lyricism to the next level.
Delivering the song in acoustic solo style for this new performance video, Combs puts the focus squarely on a set of lyrics that work like a romantic head fake. He’s gotten caught red-handed a time or two, he sings, like when he got busted buying beer for girls at the beach. Or the time he tried stealing smokes from his dad. But somehow that’s not the case with his girl, which sets up an expertly subtle double meaning — as in “I got away with,” and “I got a way with you.”
“I got away with you/ And somehow I still ain’t been found out,” goes the chorus, perhaps the only country song to ever mention the Louvre. “It’s a crazy truth, like I strolled out the gates of Alcatraz / And I walked in the Louvre, now the Mona Lisa’s hanging in my house.”
Written by Combs with Ray Fulcher and Tyler Reeve, “I Got Away With You” is part of Combs’ Platinum certified This One’s for You debut, which came out in 2017. He’ll launch his first headlining arena tour — dubbed the Beer Never Broke My Heart Tour — January 31st in Birmingham, Alabama, with Lanco and Jameson Rodgers opening.
