‘Just Like You’ paves the way for self-titled, genre-jumping solo album

This March — a year and a half after he was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry as a full-time member of Old Crow Medicine Show— guitarist Gill Landry will release his third album as a solo artist.

Recorded in a south Nashville apartment and produced by Landry himself, the album pitches its tent in the four-way intersection between Dylan-inspired folk-rock, atmospheric Americana, dusty cowboy songs and street busker ballads. Landry gets a little help from his friends along the way, duetting with British folkie Laura Marling on the lush, lovely “Take This Body” and recruiting fellow Nashville transplant Robert Ellis to add some mariachi-inspired fretwork to “Fennario.” The result is a record that’s too far removed from Old Crow Medicine Show’s old-time rave-ups to stand in that band’s shadow — and probably too good, too. (Listen to an exclusive premiere of the album’s lead single, “Just Like You,” below.)

“This album, though holding to a few similar influences as Old Crow, is very much a departure as it is more of a personal journey, musically and lyrically,” says Landry, who’d already logged several years as a solo artist and bandleader of his own vaudeville-inspired group, the Kitchen Syncopators, by the time Old Crow recruited him in 2004. “The characters in the songs — some living, some dead — are all pulled from my life.  Some are very specific, and others relate to the wide range of both good and bad hearts I’ve had the pleasure of meeting over the years. I tried to write from a perspective in which there was no blame. These songs are searchers looking for some semblance of truth in a shifting and messy landscape.”

While the other members of Old Crow Medicine Show enjoy their first major break from the road in more than two years, Landry will hit the highway this February in support of his album’s March 3rd release, opening up a string of cross-country dates for Justin Townes Earle.
