On his upcoming album, I Don’t Dance, Lee Brice namechecks both Hank Williams and Snoop Dogg, a dichotomy that isn’t so strange considering the myriad of influences heard throughout the record (nor considering today’s country radio). The singer-songwriter tells Rolling Stone Country that in the making of the new album, which he also co-produced, he was listening to everyone from Garth Brooks to Eminem. In fact, he’s a bit worried that people will accuse him of trying to channel the latter on one of his favorite tracks, “Good Man.”

Lee Brice Reveals ‘Dance’ Details

“I think people are going to think I’m rapping, but I’m just singing really fast,” he insists. “But ‘Carolina Boys’ is faster than that. So if people say I’m rapping and following a trend, I’ll tell them to go back to my first record, seven years ago, and listen to ‘Carolina Boys.'”

Besides, Brice is more into pet projects than he is into trends. In fact, before I Don’t Dance even hits shelves, he’ll craft another album that revisits a different — much different — musical influence… and earns him some brownie points with an important lady in his life.

“My mom and all her sisters sang gospel music my whole life, and they’re amazing. They made a record in Nashville,” he recalls. “I’m going to send a tour bus to pick them all up in South Carolina in July and bring them here to my house, and I’m going to make a new record on them. We’re going to sing classic gospel songs and have them sing in the background. I cannot wait.”

Whether this album will be heard outside of the Brice family is to be seen. But it won’t likely be the singer’s only departure from the slick sounds of contemporary country.

“I can’t wait to get to the next [album],” he says. “Maybe I’ll make a record that’s all acoustic one day.”

Brice’s I Don’t Dance will be out September 9th.
