Jennifer Nettles Debuts ‘His Hands’ Video, Featuring Brandy Clark

Tourmates trade lines in live performance of dark tune

The complex lyrics of Jennifer Nettles’ new song, “His Hands,” are made even more profound when sung as a duet, which the powerhouse vocalist does with tourmate Brandy Clark each night on her That Girl trek. The song begins with a story of falling in love with a “perfect gentleman,” but romance quickly turns to violence, as she reveals by the second verse that the “gentleman” is actually a monster. With Clark trading lines towards the end of the song, it becomes a conversation between two abused women, with one advising the other to “get out while you can.”

The song, which Nettles co-wrote with Hillary Lindsey and Ashley Gorley, is quite a departure from Nettles’ catalog of music with Sugarland. “I’m a different version of myself than what people might have known before — not only in my songwriting and performance, but even in the sounds on this album,” she told Rolling Stone last year of her latest solo album, That Girl. “It reflects a more soulful, grittier life. A lot has been lived in the time between the last record I made and now, and you can hear that.”

The official music video for “His Hands” was released Monday and features Nettles and Clark performing the song together at the House of Blues in Las Vegas. (Watch above.) The two will be on tour together through mid-September, after which Nettles takes a short break from the road and Clark joins Eric Church’s tour.
