Inside Kristian Bush’s New Country Musical ‘Troubadour’

Prolific singer-songwriter composes songs and story for country-music play, starring Radney Foster

Kristian Bush has raised the curtain on a new country musical. Troubadour, created and composed by the Sugarland singer-songwriter with playwright Janece Shaffer, is currently playing at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre.

A romantic-comedy set in 1950s Music City, Troubadour stars Radney Foster, of the duo Foster & Lloyd, as lead character Billy Mason. In the fictional story, Mason is the biggest star of his time, prepping for retirement during a musical changing of the guard – the moment when country transitioned from simple hillbilly tunes to the flashsy, sequined stars of the 1960s.

Filled with music, humor and romance, the play draws parallels to changes sweeping through the genre today. Also starring former Voice contestant Zach Seabaugh, Troubadour runs through February 12th.

Bush, meanwhile, is wrapping work on his second solo album, the follow-up to 2015’s Southern Gravity. The first single from the new record, “Sing Along,” is currently at radio.
