Hear Trisha Yearwood’s Soaring ‘Broken’ From ‘The Passion’

Country diva reprises Lifehouse tune for soundtrack and live staging of ‘The Passion: New Orleans’

The official soundtrack for The Passion: New Orleans is out today, featuring recordings of the songs that will be performed during Fox’s ambitious live broadcast of the musical event. The collection includes performances by cast members Jencarlos Canela, Chris Daughtry, Seal and Trisha Yearwood, who portrays Jesus’ mother Mary.

Yearwood gives a soaring treatment to “Broken,” originally recorded by Lifehouse for the band’s 2007 album Who We Are. While not explicitly about Christian belief, the song’s heavy spiritual message of faith and healing undoubtedly fits the Passion narrative of Jesus’ last days. Yearwood’s rafter-raising performance scored her first appearance on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart.

Other contemporary songs are repurposed for the production, with Seal singing Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” as Pontius Pilate and dueting with Jencarlos Canela (as Jesus) on Tina Turner’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero.”

Hosted and narrated by Tyler Perry, The Passion: New Orleans will be broadcast live on Palm Sunday (March 20th) from various locations in New Orleans. The two-hour event airs at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
