Rock and roll has often offered up a sort of sarcastic solace in times of strife – Bob Dylan’s reminder to “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” in 1963 comes to mind – and Nashville/Birmingham six-piece Banditos is continuing the tradition on their new single, “Fine Fine Day.” From their forthcoming sophomore LP Visionland, due June 23rd via Bloodshot Records, the track conjures up the fury of songs like Television’s “See No Evil” with a dose of scrappy, southern swank. Written by singer/guitarist Corey Parsons and singer/banjo player Steve Pierce, it gives the word “fine” the loaded weight it deserves.

The follow-up to their debut self-titled LP, Visionland was produced with singer-songwriter Israel Nash and Ted Young at Plum Creek Sound Studios in Dripping Springs, Texas and is named after a now shuttered theme park in Alabama that once gave a burst of small-town American hope to their childhood communities. It’s a theme echoed today as politicians offer up bloated mantras and the nostalgic promise of bygone times to generate a sense of optimism – it’s a roller coaster, alright, but one running off the rails. On Visionland, Banditos hop on for the rickety ride, with a few psychedelics in their back pockets to help ensure a more vibrant trip. “Been busting my ass, got nothin’ to show,” they sing on “Fine Fine Day.” “Weight of the world is such a heavy load.”

Now visiting Austin for South By Southwest, Banditos have toured behind acts like St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Blackberry Smoke, Nikki Lane and Old 97’s. Visionland is out June 23rd.
