Texas duo Smithfield’s new single “When You’re Gone” takes you right back to a time when Hootie and the Blowfish were filling amphitheaters with their brand of easygoing rock. There’s the flurry of playful brass and some slick harmonies, built around a peppy melody and a love-as-intoxicant metaphor. “You’re the shot that don’t need no proof / Light me up doing what you do / ‘Cause when you’re gone, baby I’m gone too,” sing members Jennifer Fielder and Trey Smith.
The pair co-wrote the song – which debuts today on SiriusXM The Highway’s Music Row Happy Hour with Buzz Brainard – with Brennin Hunt and Adam James. It comes on the heels of their most recent single, the bittersweet ballad “Hey Whiskey,” which made it to the top five songs in SiriusXM’s Hot 30.
Smithfield recently concluded the SiriusXM Highway Finds Tour, a 26-city trek across the country that also featured Steve Moakler and Drew Baldridge. They’re currently working on their yet-to-be titled next release.
