Hear Shooter Jennings Channel Pink Floyd in Waylon Cover

The Outlaw Movement — it’s not just for country anymore. On February 24th, pianist and composer Erik Deutsch will release Outlaw Jazz, an eight-song collection of country-influenced psychedelic jazz. Deutsch, who has collaborated frequently with Shooter Jennings, notably on Jennings’ 2012 Family Man album, recruited the son of Waylon Jennings for the track “Whistlers and Jugglers” — premiering on Rolling Stone Country today. The song, written by prolific songwriter, author and cartoonist Shel Silverstein, once appeared on the elder Jennings’ 1978 I’ve Always Been Crazy LP.

“When I was first introduced to Shel Silverstein’s song ‘Whistlers and Jugglers,’ I was instantly mesmerized by the imagery of the lyric: a love lost, a lesson learned, and a girl’s enchantment with ‘whistlers and jugglers, and singers of songs,'” Deutsch tells Rolling Stone Country, going on to praise Jennings’ vocal delivery.

“Shooter brings so much passion, intensity, and honesty to everything he sings, and this performance is certainly no exception. Waylon’s recording of ‘Whistlers’ is bouncier, quicker and more swinging than our version. Somehow we naturally, without discussing it, dug into the dark, slow, more mysterious side of the composition, ending up in a place reminiscent of Pink Floyd.”

Deutsch, who has performed with Charlie Hunter and Citizen Cope, also showcases his Nashville leanings on Outlaw Jazz — he resides in New York, but was reared in Music City — with a cover of the Rolling Stones‘ most famous country foray, “Wild Horses.”
