Hear Old Dominion’s Smooth New Song ‘Written in the Sand’

Group’s new album ‘Happy Endings’ arrives August 25th

Old Dominion’s breakout hit “Break Up With Him” described a potential relationship in its infancy, with an eager suitor urging a woman on the other end of a phone call to move on from her current boyfriend and give him a chance. The new song “Written in the Sand,” a new track available today, could very well be the same eager guy at a different point in a relationship.

Drawing on the silky, boudoir-oriented textures of Nineties R&B with snaps and gentle, fingerpicked acoustic guitar, “Written in the Sand” positions singer Matthew Ramsey as a guy trying his hardest to define a relationship. “Turn me on, turn me off / then you turn me back on by the weekend,” he sings, wondering if they’re just going to burn out bright and hot or buckle down to build something more permanent than mere writing in sand. In an accompanying video, the lyrics appear as text messages read by a woman who goes about her day without responding – only the “typing” bubbles at the end suggest that she may be formulating an answer.

Ramsey penned “Written in the Sand” with OD band mates Trevor Rosen and Brad Tursi, along with producer Shane McAnally. The group’s second album Happy Endings officially bows on August 25th and includes the lead single “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart” as well as the Little Big Town collaboration “Stars in the City.”
