Meghan Linsey continues her quest to bring sassy Motown swing to country with her brand new single, “Exes and Friends,” released on Tuesday.
Co-written by the former Steel Magnolia duo partner/Voice runner-up with Julie Moriva and Tyler Cain, the track places Linsey’s edgy-but-delicate vocals over a foundation made of stomp claps and dancing keys, creating a kind of Eighties pop-meets-doo-wop feel that would sound right at home next to Meghan Trainor’s “All About That Bass.” Listen to it below.
“Exes and Friends” is a lighter take on the slithering barroom R&B found on Linsey’s 2015 six-song EP Believer, with a chorus that goes “Somewhere between exes and friends/ That’s where we are, that’s where we are / Somewhere between happy endings / And broken hearts, and broken hearts.” It calls to mind Linsey’s relationship former boyfriend and Steel Magnolia partner Joshua Scott Jones, with whom she endured a public split.
Linsey recently launched a funding campaign through Patreon to help with the cost of recording a new EP. Though no release date has been announced, she plans to put it out in 2017. She also has a series of dates ahead with fellow former Voice competitor Sarah Potenza, including a November 28th show at Nashville’s City Winery.
