Hear Little Big Town’s Melancholy New Song ‘Better Man’

Group reunites with producer Jay Joyce lead on first single – written by Taylor Swift – from upcoming album

UPDATE: Following the pop and electronic explorations of their Pharrell Williams collaboration Wanderlust, Little Big Town are returning to more familiar country territory with their next album, The Breaker. The album’s first single, “Better Man,” was written by Taylor Swift. (Listen to the song above.)

As with the quartet’s smash “Girl Crush,” Karen Fairchild steps out front on “Better Man” and producer Jay Joyce – who helmed their last album Pain Killer – guides the recording. Sounding like a mixture of traumatized and relieved, she offers a glimpse from the other side of a particularly toxic relationship. “I wish it wasn’t 4 AM standing in the mirror / Saying to myself, you know you had to do it / I know the bravest thing I ever did was run,” she sings, realizing her loneliness isn’t to be trusted when it comes to this guy. Never ones to adhere strictly to tradition, the group mixes strums of acoustic guitar with more futuristic studio touches in the drum loop and pinging guitar effects.

Though the spring and summer touring season is winding down, Little Big Town still have a handful of dates left on Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights tour. On Saturday, October 22nd, they’ll play AT&T stadium outside Dallas and the following weekend on October 29th they’ll visit Detroit’s Ford Field.
