The Christmas holiday season is often seen as a joyful, celebratory occasion to be spent with loved ones. But it also has a unique ability to generate melancholy for some people, particularly when home is far away or no longer resembles what it was.
Kellie Pickler has tapped into that idea for “My Christmas Caroline,” which she recently released. Pickler — who is currently starring on the CMT series I Love Kellie Pickler — is a native of Albemarle, North Carolina and left home before she was 20 to chase her musical dreams. Over restrained strings, keys and steel, Pickler recalls the snowy mountains of her home state as well as her cousin’s laughter and grandmother’s cooking at Christmastime. Instead she’s a time zone away in Tennessee, thinking about the fond memories of time there.
As for word of the follow-up to her 2013 album The Woman I Am, Pickler doesn’t have too many specifics but is slowly working on it.
“I’m in the song picking process. I’ve been so consumed with doing the show,” she told Rolling Stone Country from the CMT Artists of the Year red carpet. “We’re gonna jump back into the new thing at the start of the year.”
I Love Kellie Pickler airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on CMT.
