Hear Jake Owen’s Funky ‘American Love’

Title track from Owen’s forthcoming album recalls single “Real Love” with its drum groove and his sing-speak delivery

Just ahead of the July 29th arrival of his new album American Love, Jake Owen has released the audio for its groove-heavy title track.

With its funky drum pattern and Owen’s sing-talk delivery, “American Love” bears a slight resemblance to his 2015 single “Real Life” — which will not appear on the new album. “American Love” is propelled by a greasy dobro lick and punctuated with stabs of horns, while Owen delivers a spiel about the confluence of factors (hot woman, cool car) that caused this American romance to ignite.

“American Love” is a good indication that Owen has decided to make music that he likes and not worry too much about what happens after that, a lesson he learned after “Real Life” fail to take off with radio. “I was going through a divorce, trying to find new things as a distraction from everything else going on. But if you can’t go out there and be really proud of something — that’s not how it’s supposed to be,” Owen told Rolling Stone Country recently. “It’s almost like I wanted to make a song I knew was polarizing.”

Owen’s current single from American Love is the similarly-named “American Country Love Song.” Following the album’s release, he’ll be in New York to promote it with a series of television appearances and a free show August 3rd at Madison Square Park.
