Pitching its tent somewhere in the grey area between gonzo soul and stoner blues, “It Runs Together” — a raw, rambling account of a doomed romance, its arrangement worthy of a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack — helps reintroduce Hard Working Americans’ gritty, greasy rock & roll.

The band’s newest album, Rest in Chaos, hits stores May 13th, but “It Runs Together” makes its premiere today on Rolling Stone Country, while millions of other hard-working Americans scramble to turn in their taxes. A true story about frontman Todd Snider meeting his now-former wife in rehab, it mixes blasts of organ and swirls of guitar tremolo with Snider’s lounge-lizard vocal delivery. There’s a woozy, western feel to the tune, too, as though we’re hearing Snider deliver the lyrics to the bartender in some middle-of-nowhere roadhouse, clinging to the counter long after all the other patrons have called it a night.

“‘It Runs Together’ is true to the letter,” says the singer, who’s joined by bassist Dave Schools, drummer Duane Trucks, keyboardist Chad Staehly, and guitarists Neal Casal and Jesse Aycock. Listen to the song below.
