Hear Electra Mustaine’s Slice of Country Optimism ‘Life Is Good’

After covering a song by her dad, Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine, the young singer-songwriter announces her country career with an upbeat late-summer jam

After delivering an unexpected but satisfying cover of “I Thought I Knew It All,” originally recorded by thrash-metal kings Megadeth, Electra Mustaine announces herself as pop-country singer with the new song “Life Is Good.” Mustaine, the daughter of Megadeth founder Dave Mustaine, filmed a lyric video for the single, premiering on Rolling Stone Country today.

Written by Mustaine with Nathan Chapman and Blair Daly, “Life Is Good” is a slice of optimistic contemporary country, with Mustaine singing about sunshine, blue skies, Ray-Bans and summer smiles. To the 18-year-old vocalist, “it don’t get much better than this / life is good.

“This song is such a feel-good song. Times right now are really crazy, with all the things going on in the world, and people need to feel good,” says Mustaine. “And I wanted to introduce myself to the country world with something that showed my personality.”

The song also includes a cameo by country guitar great Steve Wariner, whom Mustaine met when he was recording a steel-guitar part for her father’s band.

“I said, ‘You’re a country guy. What are you doing playing on a metal record? Why don’t you come play on my country record?'” Mustaine recalls. “And he said yes and we were rolling.”

As for her famous metalhead father, Mustaine says he’s heard “Life Is Good” and gave it his endorsement. “If I didn’t put this song out, I’d probably be kicked out of my house,” she says with a laugh. “It was his favorite and he was singing it all the time.”

“Life Is Good” will be included on Mustaine’s upcoming five-song EP.
