With a song title like “Tequila,” it would certainly be easy to assume there’s a party about to pour forth for the next three minutes. But what the newly released track from silky smooth duo Dan + Shay unleashes instead is a nostalgic tale of heartbreak and regret, lamenting the potency of that particular potable when it comes to conjuring romantic memories.
Penned by the duo’s Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney with writers Nicolle Galyon (Miranda Lambert’s “Automatic”) and Jordan Reynolds (“Kiss Me Like a Stranger,” Thomas Rhett), “Tequila” also offers the first taste of a new Dan + Shay record, the follow-up to their 2016 LP Obsessed, which spawned two of their three consecutive Number One hits at country radio.
“We drink a lot of tequila,” the duo’s Dan Smyers told iHeartMedia recently. “The next morning we’re like, ‘I’m never drinking tequila again.'” Instead of embracing the party vibe, the writers searched for what Smyers calls “a cool, nostalgic way to talk about tequila… Libations of any kind will take you back to a certain time, make you see certain things.”
“Tequila” is available to download and stream now, with Dan + Shay’s upcoming album expected later this year. The duo has just been announced (along with Carly Pearce) as special guest on this summer’s Rascal Flatts Back to Us Tour.
