Hear Carrie Underwood’s Reflective ‘What I Never Knew I Always Wanted’
Carrie Underwood has shared an intimate new track off her new album Storyteller, which hits stores this Friday. “What I Never Knew I Always Wanted” is a sweet ode to her seventh-month-old son, Isaiah, and her husband, Mike Fisher, marveling at the unexpected joy they’ve brought into her life.
In this co-write with Brett James and Hillary Lindsey, the seven-time Grammy-winner confesses she never was the type to wait for Prince Charming, nor did she picture herself singing lullabies in a rocking chair in the middle of night. But all that changes by the time she hits the chorus: “I finally found/What I never knew I always wanted/I couldn’t see/I was blind ’til my eyes were opened/I didn’t know there was a hole/Something missing in my soul/’Til you filled it up/With your love, yeah.”
The song is the final track on Storyteller, and it’s the only one with motherhood as its central theme – which may come as a surprise to fans, since this is her first post-baby album. “What I Never Knew I Always Wanted” is the fourth tune she’s previewed off the new LP, although she isn’t expected to release it as a single.
Underwood celebrates this Friday’s hotly-anticipated album launch with a live performance on NBC’s Today show. On November 4th, she’ll join Brad Paisley in hosting the 2015 CMA Awards, where she’s nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year and Music Video of the Year (for “Something in the Water”).
