Hear Billy Ray Cyrus, Joe Perry Team for ‘Tulsa Time’

‘Still the King’ star and Aerosmith guitarist cover a Don Williams classic

Billy Ray Cyrus has recruited Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry for a new, bottom-heavy cover of Don Williams’ “Tulsa Time,” one of nearly a dozen collaborations on Cyrus’ upcoming album, Thin Line.

“A couple of years ago, I started making an album that was a tip of the hat to my heroes: outlaws like Waylon, Kristofferson, Cash and Haggard,” Cyrus told Rolling Stone Country earlier this summer, days before his new TV show, Still the King, premiered on CMT. As the record began taking shape, Cyrus widened his focus, writing songs inspired not only by the legends who filled the Highwaymen’s ranks, but Eighties country stars and Seventies classic rockers, too. He even reached out to some of those rock & roll heroes, personally enlisting people like Deep Purple’s Glenn Hughes to make cameos on Thin Line.

With Perry playing lead guitar, Cyrus’ cover of “Tulsa Time” puts a riff-heavy, boogie-woogie spin on the Don Williams original. The song makes its premiere today, hours after Perry was hospitalized following an onstage collapse during a Brooklyn show with his hard-rock side project, Hollywood Vampires. Take a listen above. Meanwhile, Thin Line is due out September 9th.
