Dan + Shay performed their Grammy-winning hit “Tequila” at the 61st Grammy Awards on Sunday night.
The duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney chose to strip away the pop-ready production of the crossover smash, with Mooney singing and playing piano, Smyers backing him up on acoustic guitar and a string section filling in the gaps. Delivering the song on a compact circular stage near the center of the arena, it was a performance of subtle elegance, which nonetheless didn’t stop Mooney from hitting and holding a huge note to cap off their star turn.
Written by Smyers, Nicolle Galyon and Jordan Reynolds, “Tequila” was certified double platinum and earned Dan + Shay their first Grammy award, for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. It was also nominated for Best Country Song, an honor that went to Kacey Musgraves’ “Space Cowboy” during the Grammys Premiere Ceremony prior to the telecast.
“Tequila” also gave the pair their first Top 40 single on the Hot 100 and was the most streamed country track of 2018.
The duo will launch a headlining tour on February 28th in New Orleans. Their current single “Speechless,” the follow-up to “Tequila,” was the group’s fifth single to hit Number One on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.
