Long live the King!

Three months after the final tour of his 33-year career, George Strait — the reigning King of Country, even in retirement — is letting all of his fans in on the fun had by 104,793 people on June 7th in Dallas. A new live album, The Cowboy Rides Away: Live from AT&T Stadium, captures his historic last performance on the farewell tour, which broke a previous attendance record set by the Rolling Stones.

Recorded at the home of the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington, Texas, the project shines a light not only on Strait, but also the generations of country fans who’ve followed in his boot steps. More than 10 musical guests make appearances throughout the disc, including Eric Church, Vince Gill, Sheryl CrowMiranda Lambert and Faith Hill. Strait’s son, George “Bubba” Strait, Jr., also gets a piece of the action, joining his dad for a performance of Bubba’s own tune, “Arkansas Dave.”

Released today by MCA Nashville, the album also includes an encore performance of “All My Ex’s Live in Texas,” performed as a group singalong with all of Strait’s musical guests. Each singer — from Kenny Chesney to Jason Aldean to Martina McBride — takes a turn at the mic, paying tribute to a country singer who remained at the top of his game throughout three and a half decades. The song may be breezy, but it’s a damn moving performance.

Thanks to CMT, most of the concert (including “All My Ex’s”) can be viewed below. And while this immortalized show marks the end of Strait’s touring career, the album is not his swan song. The singer renewed his longtime deal with MCA Nashville last year to record five new albums of all-new material.
