It’s been 10 years since Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook in his Harvard dorm room… and less than 10 hours since Garth Brooks logged onto his own Facebook fan page for the first time. That’s right: Garth Brooks, the somewhat technophobic man against the (digital) machine, is officially participating in social media.
“Well, I guess it’s official! We’re now on Facebook,” he said in his first post, a 45-second video in which Brooks — ever the savvy promoter, even at 7 in the morning — sports a baseball hat emblazoned with the Garth Brooks logo. “I really wasn’t sure about this at the start, but then a friend of mine said something that just made all kinds of sense. She said, ‘Think of it more as a conversation.’ I like that. But I’m already finding out on my own that it’s wiping out the walls between you and me, and I really like that.” (Watch the full video below.)
In addition to launching a Facebook fan page, Brooks also opened a Twitter account this morning, kickstarting his journey into 140-character land by posting a selfie. He also sent a tweet to his wife, Trisha Yearwood, and posted a Veterans Day message thanking “our past past and present military personnel.”
Man Against Machine, the singer’s first album in 13 years, hits stores today. Brooks — who, despite his album’s theme of maintaining one’s humanity in a world increasingly dominated by technology and automation, finally seems to have resolved himself to the digital world — recently launched his own digital service, GhostTunes, to sell the album online.
