Eli Young Band Kick Up ‘Dust’ on ‘Letterman’

Grammy-nominated quartet show their Texas rock roots with gritty performance

Casual fans who came to the Eli Young Band via their Number One ballad “Crazy Girl” may mistakenly consider the group — made up of singer Mike Eli, guitarist James Young, bassist Jon Jones and drummer Chris Thompson — purveyors of mid-tempo fare. But the quartet, who earned a Grammy nomination for their second Number One, “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” is a country-rock band at heart. They proved that Tuesday night with a particularly high-energy performance on the Late Show With David Letterman.

Playing their kiss-off new single “Dust,” a track from latest album 10,000 Towns, Eli Young Band sounded every bit the Red Dirt road warriors they are. The guys looked the part too: Young was sporting a beat-up straw cowboy hat, while Eli’s short-sleeved shirt showed off a heavily inked arm. Check out their performance above, including Letterman’s off-kilter grilling of Thompson about his drum kit.

Eli Young Band are currently on tour this summer, hitting the fair and festival circuit, along with select dates on Jake Owen’s Days of Gold Tour.
