See Dawes Sing the Beatles, Update ‘Stay Down’ in New Video
Dawes return for a new installment of their “Poolside Session” series with a stripped-down take on “Stay Down,” a track pulled from the band’s recent Passwords LP.
Though this video, unlike last month’s recording of “Feed the Fire,” doesn’t actually feature a pool, “Stay Down” is a particularly appropriate track for the theme, with its imagery of a michelada-laden getaway. It even starts with some ad-libbed riffing on the Beatles “Please Please Me.” Once Taylor Goldsmith and company get down to business, however, the tone isn’t so lighthearted, and the bare-bones arrangement accentuates the song’s underlying discontent. “This song is equal parts about vacation and about hell, and the occasional similarities therein,” Goldsmith says. “I’m sure you can relate to some extent.”
Passwords, the group’s sixth album and first in two years, was released on June 22nd, with the band kicking off its adjoining tour earlier this month. They visit College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Connecticut, tonight.
