Newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Dave Grohl found himself in a rather unlikely venue on Wednesday night in Nashville: onstage at the famously low-key Bluebird Cafe listening room.

The Foo Fighters screamer and onetime Nirvana drummer toned it down for an hourlong set of Foo tunes, according to The Tennessean, including “Times Like These,” “Big Me,” “Learn to Fly” and “Everlong.” The appearance was unannounced and found Grohl singing for a decidedly smaller crowd than which he is accustomed. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler no doubt had a similar experience when he popped up at the tiny Bluebird last September to join a songwriters jam.

Grohl, whose performance was filmed for a rumored documentary, is no stranger to Nashville. Last year, he produced and drummed on the Zac Brown Band’s digital EP The Grohl Sessions, Vol. 1—which will be re-released as a physical CD and DVD on May 19—and joined the group onstage at November’s CMA Awards for a heavy interpretation of The Grohl Sessions‘ “Day for the Dead.”
