Colbie Caillat on Sunny New Album, Acoustic Tour: The Ram Report

Grammy winner (and new Nashville resident) visits our studio to tell stories behind ‘The Malibu Sessions’

Colbie Caillat had one hell of a last hurrah before she moved from her native Malibu to Nashville last month. The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter spent two months living in a beach house with several of her collaborators, including fiancé Justin Young, sister Morgan Caillat Stockmeir, producer John Shanks, frequent co-writer Jason Reeves and all of their families. It was a working vacation, as they spent every day writing and recording songs — the result of which is The Malibu Sessions, Caillat’s new album out today (October 7th).

“It was an experience I always wanted when I was making an album, because normally you have to drive in traffic in L.A. and it’s stressful and the sessions weren’t as fun,” the singer tells Rolling Stone Country. “But for this, we lived there and we’d wake up, record, go walk the beach, eat lunch, go record again. . .  It was such a great experience.”

The carefree, organic nature of the recording sessions comes through in the music, which isn’t too far of a departure from the breezy, upbeat hits of her past that have made Caillat one of the most lauded and recognizable voices in pop music for the last decade. But this time around, there is more of a melting pot of influences, as she draws from Seventies rock, pop, reggae and a little R&B.

The album’s first single is a feel-good love song called “Goldmine.” Watch its video, filmed on the same Malibu shores, below.

Caillat and several of her collaborators from the beach house embark on an acoustic tour tomorrow. She calls her new show a “listening experience,” and will play every track from The Malibu Sessions, along with beloved hits from her vault, such as “Bubbly” and “Try.”

“I’ve never done an acoustic tour and it’s my favorite way to perform, so that was something really exciting about this tour,” says Caillat. “Not only that I get to have my best friends and fiancé out there with me but that we get to do it very stripped down.”

Justin Young and High Dive Heart (the married duo of Jason Reeves and Danelle Leverett) will join Caillat as special guests on the tour. See a list of cities and dates here.
