Christina Aguilera to Play Country Wannabe on ABC’s ‘Nashville’
Looks like Blake Shelton has turned The Voice‘s queen bee into a country fan.
Christina Aguilera has signed on for a multi-episode appearance on the ABC musical drama, Nashville, People magazine reports. She’ll play the familiar role of a pop superstar, but one who comes to Music City and realizes her heart is really in country. As the show continues to equally represent the cutthroat business side of the music business, Aguilera’s character will likely have her dreams of cutting a country record squashed by her record label.
The Grammy-winning singer has dabbled in acting but never before on a primetime drama. She graced the silver screen with Cher in 2010’s Burlesque and played herself that same year in the Russell Brand comedy, Get Him to the Greek. Aguilera was also set to take on the iconic role of Eva Peron in Broadway 4D, a film montage of legendary musical theater scenes, but that project has been put on hold due to financial setbacks.

In addition to her Nashville role, the New York native is plotting her own TV series on the ABC Family network. Tentatively titled Hearts and Clubs, the scripted show will follow the love lives of Las Vegas entertainers. And, of course, there’s The Voice, on which she makes her return February 23rd after taking a few seasons off to record a new album and welcome her second child — a daughter born last summer.
While Nashville has included cameos by a host of real-life country stars — Sara Evans, Luke Bryan, Trisha Yearwood, Pam Tillis, Jay DeMarcus and the Band Perry, to name a few — only Kelly Clarkson has represented the pop world on the show. There’s no word yet on dates for Aguilera’s episodes. Nashville airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
