Carrie Underwood’s Chart Reign Continues With ‘Church Bells’

On today’s Ram Report, we break down big career numbers for the country superstar

Carrie Underwood falls behind only Reba McEntire, Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton when it comes to women topping the country singles charts. This week, she scores her 24th career Number One with the vengeful “Church Bells,” which is also the third consecutive chart-topper from the Oklahoma native’s Storyteller album.

Written by Zach Crowell, Brett James and Hillary Lindsey, “Church Bells” is about a woman who grows up dirt poor and marries filthy rich, only to eventually find her husband is an abusive alcoholic. Instead of going to church one more time with sunglasses covering her bruises, she kills him. . . and seemingly gets away with it.

“I love songs about strong women,” says Underwood. “I love being sucked into that story, rooting for the woman and seeing that she does something powerful that she never thought she could do. People are strongest when they’re pushed to their limits.”

After a pair of dates August 10th and 12th at the Grand Ole Opry — where she’s been a member since 2008 — Underwood will resume the fall leg of her Storyteller tour August 31st in Anchorage, Alaska. She has a long list of cross-country dates through November and will then take the trek to Australia to close out the year.
