Last we checked, Brad Paisley doesn’t drink. Which makes it pretty ironic that protestors from the controversial Westboro Baptist Church picketed the country star’s show in Bonnor Springs, Kansas, on Sunday, holding signs denouncing drunks.

Brad Paisley to Advise Singers on ABC Reality Show ‘Rising Star’

Of course, the outcries were in reference to one of Paisley’s most beloved hits, the hilariously clever “Alcohol” – one of Rolling Stone Country‘s picks for the 100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time. But we’re hard-pressed to find an explanation for the “Sin Breeds Violence” and “God Controls All” signs in regards to Paisley, nor for the huge smiles on the religious fanatics’ faces when the singer approached them on his way into the Cricket Wireless Amphitheater.

“Westboro Baptist Selfie!! Or west-Burro(ass) selfie. Hopefully they can hear the show out here. We’ll play loud,” Paisley posted on Twitter and Instagram, along with a photo of himself with the protestors. (See it below.)

Westboro Baptist has camped outside numerous concerts over the past few years, spreading messages of intolerance. Back in March, they picketed a Lorde show in Kansas City, Missouri, explaining that the pop star is “teaching young people how to be indolent rebels.” Last September, Vince Gill fought back outside his show in Kansas City, confronting the extremists, who were angry with him for divorcing his first wife and remarrying. “You’re lucky you don’t have a sign that says something about my wife,” the protective husband of Amy Grant told them in a heated exchange. “You know what else [Jesus Christ] said? He said a lot about forgiveness, about grace. You guys don’t have any of that.”
